Yep, pretty much agree on all counts there...so feel ever so slightly bad that I don't have a wordier response!

Only thing I'd add is that fight choreography and shot framing & beyond that: editing are not the charge of the same person (I know I'm preaching to the choir here!)...he might of orchestrated (very) similar moves but the delivery through final edit ("shot for shot") is out of his hands. There's an endless number of ways to capture the same subject matter...

apologies for my abuse of parenthesis! 'Tis a topic I could easily sink a good pub afternoon into, not necessarily done justice to by web comments

Sure, get that, although I guess most directors would prefer it if their legendary fight choreographer came up with some new moves, y'know, in the signature style, rather than going shot for shot. And if you look at the wider movie, and how systematically derivative it is, you've got to wonder whether The Wachowskis really saw (see?) themselves as being in the business of doing anything new, rather than just referencing and recycling with the polish of big budget. Guess we'll find out when we see Cloud Atlas, can't see them making that work without a fair few good ideas of their own.

More broadly, I'm not sure I buy the 'everything is a remix'. Sure, people have styles, influences, and aspirations, and these manifest themselves in the things we create. But there's a reason people don't reinvent the wheel, and someone still had to roll one into being in the first place.

...well the choreographer *was* Yuen Woo-ping, so like a musician, his signature style & turns of phrase show up in everything he does.

This:

"Content is story, but also universe, the universe through which the story arc passes."

Is everything that I love about Ridley Scott's sci-fi. I used to have the Alien Quadrilogy* and spent hours poring over the extra features, just watching and re-watching the amount of effort that went into, as you say, creating that universe. Same for Bladerunner... (and perhaps, tangentially, Spielberg's efforts in Minority Report).

It's also why I have a soft spot for Pitch Black / Dark Fury / Chronicles of Riddick (DC) too; the courage of defining a universe for your characters (and many others) to exist in is something that I have to sit back and admire, if done properly at least.

Good words Mr Light, as per.

Before ordering your $19.95 limited-time-only-holiday-offer Frank Miller's approved collectable, make sure to ask the operator if you can get some authentic Pakistani blood on the coin: http://www.adbusters.org/blogs/adbusters-blog/justice-coin.html

Interesting, not surprised with Miller's polemics, it is so bad you kind of have to take if for a joke. But on the other hand he is not exactly renowned for carefully balanced analysis, as you write he comes across as an angry bitter old man surpassed by a movement which has more to say about society than he could ever have imagined/understood and he must be feeling it. What strikes me most with those kinds of rhetorics recently is the recurring one dimensional reference to the use of iPhones, it seems the iPhone represents the pinnacle of what this materialistic society has to offer, for which people should be ever thankful if they are allowed to use and then just shut up. Quite absurd when you think of it as an ultimate communication device. Perhaps it is just meant to be used in conjunction with the stock market app and some mind numbing games. Too bad Steve has gone to enlighten us further and too bad there seems nothing else to do with our lives once we are entitled to one of those devices other than enlist with the army and chase some elusive Arabs. According to good old Miller's world anyway...

Kind of, but I'd argue that both are the result of cultural conditioning, and a kind of self-appointed subservience people actively exhibit in the face of unelected overseers - something like Stockholm Syndrome, experienced by entire populations. Just wait until the Queen pops her clogs, that'll make the passing of Kim Jong the Second (as Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry called him) look veritably understated.

Yes, but not the same oddness surely? One seems contrived, orchestrated; the other spontaneous.
