…well the choreographer *was* Yuen Woo-ping, so like a musician, his signature style & turns of phrase show up in everything he does.

Sure, get that, although I guess most directors would prefer it if their legendary fight choreographer came up with some new moves, y’know, in the signature style, rather than going shot for shot. And if you look at the wider movie, and how systematically derivative it is, you’ve got to wonder whether The Wachowskis really saw (see?) themselves as being in the business of doing anything new, rather than just referencing and recycling with the polish of big budget. Guess we’ll find out when we see Cloud Atlas, can’t see them making that work without a fair few good ideas of their own.
More broadly, I’m not sure I buy the ‘everything is a remix’. Sure, people have styles, influences, and aspirations, and these manifest themselves in the things we create. But there’s a reason people don’t reinvent the wheel, and someone still had to roll one into being in the first place.

Yep, pretty much agree on all counts there…so feel ever so slightly bad that I don’t have a wordier response!
Only thing I’d add is that fight choreography and shot framing & beyond that: editing are not the charge of the same person (I know I’m preaching to the choir here!)…he might of orchestrated (very) similar moves but the delivery through final edit (“shot for shot”) is out of his hands. There’s an endless number of ways to capture the same subject matter…
