Yes, but not the same oddness surely? One seems contrived, orchestrated; the other spontaneous.

Kind of, but I’d argue that both are the result of cultural conditioning, and a kind of self-appointed subservience people actively exhibit in the face of unelected overseers – something like Stockholm Syndrome, experienced by entire populations. Just wait until the Queen pops her clogs, that’ll make the passing of Kim Jong the Second (as Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry called him) look veritably understated.
